Temple Sholom Chicago Bat Mitzvah : Zoe Helen Bernstein

I am thrilled to roll out this Bat Mitzvah held at Temple Sholom.  Zoe Bernstein is the daughter of a dear friend of mine and that makes this image set that much more personal.

Having shot a few times for friends since lightening up on that moratorium, I have found myself (yes, still filled with tons of anxiety) feeling a connection to them that did not exist before.  It is always an honor to work for anyone who asks me to show up.  But when folks with a critical eye and an arsenal of people in their Rolodex approaches me, the honor is elevated.  Mix that with being thrusted into an intimate family affair, and I can't help but feel like I am part of the family.

Having shot a family birthday for the Bernstein’s, I already knew most of the extended family as well as key, close friends.  For me, the Mitzvah was a reunion and the familiarity allowed me to focus on the subtle, quick moments to make Zoe’s story come to life.

My formal training in journalism taught me the most important aspect of telling a story through photographs is to hone in on fleeting moments and the connections between people.  But first, find the right light, and the composition.  Then wait.  But be proactive and anticipate where those connections and moments might happen next.

Zoe, you were a joy to work with.  Thank you for allowing me to follow you around all morning and evening.  And to the Dan and Beth Bernstein, thank you both for being special in my life.  I hope you enjoy the range of moments captured from Zoe's Mitzvah.

See you in 2017 for round two.
